A day in the life of a Trainee - Laura

Whats a day in the life of a Berg trainee?

Honest answer it depends on the day!

So for today...

I arrived at the office at about 8:45am which is usual for me. First tasks of the day involved firing up my PC, resetting my voicemail and putting the kettle on. After checking my emails I found I had two payments to process. Some of the work I do involves managing my own debt collection files, so when money comes in I have to process the payments and inform our clients that I will be forwarding the money to them.

Having done that I prepared for a client meeting. My role in the meeting is to accompany the dispute resolution partner and take a file note of the meeting. In order to do this most effectively I like to have a quick review of the file so that I have some concept of the discussions going on in the meeting, otherwise you can find you get very lost very quickly. After meetings I like to write up my file note straight away, I find I remember more that way. Once the note was completed and added to the file I went out for a bite of lunch. One of the best things about working in the city is that you can always go and grab a sandwich with a friend.

After lunch I drafted 3 letters responding to various correspondences I had received in this morning's post. (Two responding to solicitors one to a private individual) Once the letters are drafted I left them for approval and emailed my debt collection clients from this morning. Having received the client cheques from accounts and informing the clients of the same; I wrote to the clients enclosing the cheques and sent them in the post.

By now it was about 5pm. Due to a career networking event in the evening (which all the trainees were attending) I wanted to be ready to leave just after 5:30pm so decided to do some business development work. At Berg all trainees are expected to be involved in the business development of the company and at the moment my role is to research local entrepreneurs on behalf of my head of department. After working on profiles for a couple of contacts I found it was already time to leave in order to make the career event on time.

So once again I found myself logging off my PC and wondering where on earth the day had gone. As for tomorrow I can at least tell you I probably won't be doing anything that I had done today...
