Berg Legal

Paul Tomlinson
Associate and head of intellectual property

Specialist areas: Intellectual property, data protection and IT.
Ideal for: Identifying, protecting, exploiting and enforcing IP rights.
Background: Paul was an electromechanical engineer before qualifying as a lawyer. He also has a masters’ degree in biotechnology law and worked for Eversheds and Freeth Cartwright before joining Berg Legal in January 2006.
Career highlights: Advising on branding and licensing issues for Content by Conran, a new range of contemporary furniture by Sir Terence Conran; advising on the cult Brit flick Dead Man’s Cards; and on various licence agreements with Formula 1, Land Rover and Disney, amongst many others.
We say: Practical and down to earth. Able to think outside the box to find creative and pragmatic solutions.
Best piece of advice: Don’t disclose new ideas without making sure they are protected first - and be prepared to act quickly if you need to enforce your IP rights.
Outside of work: Paul played rugby union for many years and is still involved in coaching and refereeing. He also enjoys independent travel, photography, reading (all sorts of things), architecture, design and anything to do with history.
Personal highlights: Quad biking through the Valley of Fire, Nevada and climbing Sigiriya, Sri Lanka.
Likes: Originality.
