The British Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (the "BVCA") has published an updated version of its guide to responsible investment for private equity and venture capital firms.
Except for the inclusion of a new supplement, the changes are largely minor. However, the supplement aims to address in detail the evaluation of environmental, social and governance issues at the pre-investment stage. The BVCA recommends that during the pre-investment
stage, firms should draw up a responsible investment policy with separate sections devoted to environmental, social and governance issues, known as ESG sections. The BVCA also recommends that, in order to evaluate ESG issues, a three step process should be
adopted, to include, top-level screening, business profiling and due diligence.
It is expected that the BVCA will publish guidelines for the remaining periods of the private equity investment cycle, i.e. immediately post-investment, post investment and exit.
