At it’s peak in the 1980s Littlewoods had grown to become Europe’s largest private company, valued at in excess of a billion pounds. Still a major force in the early 90’s, Berg was appointed by its then Chief Executive, Barry Dale.
Mr. Dale had been dismissed summarily against a backdrop of publicized allegations of fraud and dishonesty following an internal report by corporate investigators.
We were asked to represent Mr. Dale at short notice for unfair dismissal and breach of contract.
Littlewoods appointed Herbert Smith, a magic law firm known for being one of the most successful litigation firms in the UK, who unsurprisingly lodged a counterclaim for £12m against Mr Dale personally. Not to be intimidated within eighteen months we had secured a very valuable settlement which involved a large payment by Littlewoods to Mr Dale. Following the successful settlement we assisted Mr Dale in making an audacious bid to buy out Littlewoods itself!
